Road Tripping Pt IX

In the morning we drove from Durango to Silverton, through the San Juan National Forest. It was a spectacular drive through mountains, valleys, and forest. From Silverton we were going to go to Animas Forks, a deserted mining town, about 12 miles away and at an elevation of 11,584 ft above sea level. The paved road in Silverton became a wide dirt and gravel road for more than half the drive. As the road started to ascend higher into the mountains, it became a one lane rutted dirt pass. Shane and I decided not to venture any further since signs recommended 4WD vehicles only. We were so close! We headed back to Durango for lunch, then started out for Albuquerque, NM, 215 miles away, our next destination on our road trip. Once in Albuquerque, we checked into the hotel, then headed out to see the city.
