Europa - Deutschland Part III: Berlin

Shane and I went to the Zoologischer Garten Berlin. It is the oldest and best known zoo in Germany. With 1,500 different species and almost 20,500 animals the zoo presents the most comprehensive collection of species in the world. The zoo and its aquarium is considered to be the most visited zoo in Europe and one of the most popular worldwide.  We spent the day at the zoo and aquarium.  Then we had dinner at an outdoor cafe.  Afterward we headed to the Siegessäule, a monument designed by Heinrich Strack to commemorate the Prussian victory in the Danish-Prussian War, by the time it was inaugurated, Prussia had also defeated Austria in the Austro-Prussian War  and France in the Franco-Prussian War.  The viewing platform on the victory column was closed for the evening, so there was nobody at the monument when we arrived.  The monument stands in the middle of a five point roundabout and provides a nice view of Berlin.  We walked back to the hotel from there.
